SOURCE OF INFORMATION (Feb 2001):

Roxie Carlton's son took the Pre-GED Test and the GED Test in February 2001.  Information on this page is copied from the instructions given to our family by the Springdale High School at that time.  If your child pursues a GED Certificate and finds changes have been made in this process, please notify the group immediately by posting a message on our E-Mail Loop.

If you are under 18 years of age, you must take a "Pre-GED" test at the High School.  The test is given at Springdale High School, in the counselor's offices, the first Thursday of each month.  You are required to bring a copy of your homeschool filing. Assuming you pass this "pre-test", the high school will give APPROVAL for your student to take the actual GED test at any local community college or vo-tech school.

Vo-Tech advised that they will not allow a student under age 18  to take the actual GED test without the high school's permission.   Vo-Tech requires the GED test in order to enroll and requires the high school's approval to enroll a student who is under age 18.

NEW INFORMATION (5/31/01):

Another local home school family advises that they were able to work with the Fayetteville Adult Education Center, (contact Sharon Wimberly #501-444-3041).  The Fayetteville Adult Education Center did not require their student to prepare and take a "PRE-GED" test.  The home schooled student, age 16, was allowed to take the actual GED Test as soon as he was ready.  Vo-Tech schools will accept GED certificates earned from facilities other than their own.

PRE-GED TESTING
INFORMATION:

The Pre-GED test is given in the Springdale High School Counseling Center classroom on the first Thursday of each month.

Sign up to take the test in the Learning Center office at least 3 days before the test is given.

The test begins at 12:00pm, so you need to be present by 11:45am.  Be prompt and bring a sharpened pencil.

REQUIREMENTS:

1.  You must be 17 years old with parent permission to sign up for testing.  Home schooled students may be 16 years of age.

WHEN I PASS THE PRE-GED... THEN WHAT???

1.  You must be prepared to enroll in the Adult Education Program at the Northwest Technical Institute (across from the Springdale Airport).  NOTE:  Your Pre-GED score is valid for 4 days.  You must enroll in the Adult Education Program at NTI within that time.

2.  The attendance office will drop you from the school rolls, when you bring  Dr. Hays verification that you:
(a)  passed the Pre-GED test, and
(b)  are enrolled in the Adult Education Program at the Northwest Technical Inst.
(this pretty much applies only to public school students)

3.  The attendance office will give the homeschool student a form that is the High School's Waiver for the student to enroll in adult education at NTI and be accepted for GED preparation.

This company will mail enrolled students an "Official GED Practice Test" produced by American Council on Education.  The student takes the test and enters answers online.  GEDonline grades the test and recommends areas needing further study.  It was web authors experience that the Pre-GED Test given at the Springdale High School was produced by American Council on Education, but was a different FORM than the one given by GEDonline for study.

Rogers Public Library has a set of videos available for rent that teach the basic principles that will be on the GED test.  They are older, but still very, very good.  The videos would be a good gauge for your student to see if he/she knows all the information presented.
